The Most

Neither participant
Would accept responsibility
For the undeniable chaos in their lives
A mother and daughter
Pitted against one another
Each in her own
Right
One ready to attack
The other defend
And vice versa
Mirror images
So much alike
Without realizing it
The pain in accepting
Their shortcomings
Is admitting failure
Neither one willing
To trade identities
Or titles
One lashing out
One holding in
And vise versa
Hurting each other
In obvious and
Not so obvious ways
Both combatants
Lose
Defeat is inevitable
Guilt – their prize
Retreating
As tears fall
in the dark
In the silence
Broken hearts
Broken spirits
Crossed lines
Betrayed by the one
Who is
Supposed to love you
The most
