lying in bed
with their backs to each other
pretending to sleep
minds wander away
to a time when they cared
and they laughed and they loved
and they ached for each other
their dream was alive
the splendor of yesterday
slipped from their grasp
as they slowly lost interest
or interest lost them
they lay back to back
as still as the wall
not making a sound
their dream is no more
how long will they bear
the silence of silence
with words locked inside
so no one is hurt
is this how they’ll live
the rest of their lives
hanging on to a dream
that died long ago
